Description

This engaging KS2 Geography PowerPoint lesson (30 slides) on volcanoes introduces pupils to how volcanoes form, where they are found in the world and why they erupt. Pupils explore the structure of volcanoes, the difference between magma and lava, and learn about the three types of volcano: active, dormant and extinct.

The lesson explains how volcanic mountains grow over time and investigates why many volcanoes are located around the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet.

Pupils also study famous volcanoes around the world, including Mount Etna, Mount Fuji, Mount Vesuvius and Mount St Helens.

A fascinating case study of Pompeii shows how the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 destroyed the Roman city. Pupils learn about Pliny the Younger, whose eyewitness account of the eruption still helps scientists today.

The lesson includes guided discussion questions, comprehension activities, vocabulary tasks and an independent research task, making it ideal for classroom teaching, revision or homework.

This resource is suitable for KS2 Geography lessons on volcanoes, natural hazards and tectonic processes.
