Pupils begin by investigating how Titanic was designed and constructed at Harland & Wolff in Belfast, before exploring the people who travelled and worked aboard the famous ocean liner.

They follow Titanic’s maiden voyage from Southampton to Cherbourg and Queenstown (Cobh) before examining the events of 14–15 April 1912, including the ice warnings, collision with the iceberg, evacuation, lifeboats, wireless distress messages and the rescue of survivors by RMS Carpathia.

Importantly, pupils are encouraged to think like historians rather than simply memorise facts.

Activities explore cause and consequence, chronology, evidence, historical interpretation and source analysis. Children consider the different factors that contributed to the disaster and investigate why historians should be cautious about assigning the tragedy to one person or one single cause.

The workbook also examines the aftermath of the disaster, changes to safety at sea, the International Ice Patrol and SOLAS, before exploring the discovery of Titanic’s wreck in 1985 and why the story should continue to be treated with sensitivity and respect.
